Lake Mead Walk Start Point Relocated

The Lake Mead Walk Box has been relocated to the Historical Boulder City Hotel effective December 21, 2013.  We will be driving to the Start of the walk (7.3) miles.  I am very excitied about this change because it starts at the bridge and goes down to the dam,  through the boneyard exhibit and also walks through two of the railroad tunnels with beautiful views of Lake Mead.
Hope to see you on the trails - Brenda LVHRS POC of the LM Walk and Treasurer

Boulder City Walk

Seven members of the Las Vegas High Rollers & Strollers met on a slightly cool morning on Saturday to walk the Boulder City year round event.  With the Arts in the Park this weekend, after the walk and of course eating, people could take advantage of all the great booths that were waiting for our arrival! We took advantage of patronizing the Start/Finish for a nice breakfast and lunch selection.

Look how much fun we are having!!

Tater Tours hits Las Vegas and Surrounding Area

Head Tater, Mary, a member of the club, brought her 50 Tater Tots to Las Vegas area on Sept. 28th.  The group stayed at the Start/Finish for the Strip Walks, the Westin Hotel located on Flamingo Rd.  A special thanks to Al & Susan Korejwo, Brenda Harris, and Smitty and Ellen Reeves, for helping out as guides for the group. On Sunday, we walked the North & South Strip and then did an abbreviated Lake Mead Walk on Monday. Walking the National Parks of the West was a real joy, although we were unable to walk in Rocky Mountain National Park because of all the severe flooding in the Denver Area. We visited Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Bryce and Zion with some great walks!  I nice ending of the two week trip with great fellowship, walking, and of course eating!

Las Vegas High Rollers & Strollers to ALASKA!!

Part of the walking club from Las Vegas joined Tater Tours on a trip to Alaska.  The trip was from June 25th to July 5th.  The participants were Al & Susan Korejwo, Brenda Harris, Reesa Gygi and Mary Ptacek (Head Tater) Everyone had a great time, with lots of walking and sightseeing!  We saw lots of wildlife from the sea and from the land, including whales, sea lions, eagles, linx, caribou, moose, dall sheep, grizzly bear, and puffins!  We even were able to see Mt. McKinley, that is only seen by 30% of the tourists who actually visit.  We actually participated in 2 walks in Anchorage and then one in Denali National Park.  We spent 3 days in Anchorage, 3 days in Seward, and 3 days in Denali National Park.  Lots of touring was done by the walking group and then everyone had the opportunity to even do other tours on their own.

Summer in Las Vegas

It's summer time in Las Vegas and the temperatures are hot!  Due to the weather, our group volksmarches are suspended until September, however some people do choose to do the walks even during the middle of summer.  If you choose to do a volksmarch during the summer in Las Vegas, please heed the following advice:

  • Begin your walk at daybreak when temperatures are coolest.
  • Always carry plenty of water with you and stay hydrated.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • Wear loose fitting long pants and long sleeved tops to help provide extra protection from the sun.
  • Wear a hat or carry an umbrella for extra sun protection.
  • Pay attention to weather reports and don't walk during times of high temperature warnings.
  • Stop and rest in a shaded place (preferably indoors with air conditioning) if necessary.
  • Choose walks such as the North Strip or South Strip which have portions of the walks indoors (as they pass through the Strip casinos).
  • Do not walk right before, during, or right after a rain storm (flash floods are common in the summer months and some of our walks are through beautiful washes that are landscaped for walking however these low areas can turn into raging rivers during a flash flood).
  • If in doubt, contact a POC for the walk you want to do for further information.

Tater Tours to Virginia/North Carolina

Even though the numbers were small, we all had a great time with walking the 3 B's, Botanical Gardens, Beaches, and Battlefields! Head Tater with Reesa and the Tater Tots. At Fort Monroe, I had even arranged for the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier to pass by while we were walking!  The tram ride at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens was great prior to walking!  Walking Kill Devil Hills, where Orville and Wilbur Wright started it all was super.  Then of course walking the beaches on the Outer Banks with the weather just fantastic was an added plus.  Then we ended with walking the Petersburg National Battlefield for Memorial Day!   What a fitting end to a great trip!

The Koala Club Comes to Boulder City

The CELEBRITIES in Boulder City welcomed the Koala Club from Germany to our small town of Boulder City.  Comments were a plenty just didn't understand them as they were all spoken in German.  Gathering from their smiles I am sure they had a great time on our Lake Mead and Boulder City YRE walks.

10 Items to Bring With You on a Las Vegas Volksmarch

Volksmarching in Las Vegas is a unique experience and often quite different than volksmarching in other locales.  Here's ten items you will want to bring with you on a LVHRS volksmarch:

  1. Water (it's a desert out here and you can become dehydrated quickly)
  2. Sunscreen (it is also sunny here nearly every day of the year)
  3. A hat (ditto)
  4. Sunglasses (although some of our walks will take you through casinos and other buildings, as mentioned above, it is usually sunny in Las Vegas)
  5. Your walk cards (event and distance cards are not available in the walk boxes)
  6. A camera (most of our walks take place in very photogenic areas)
  7. A cell phone (again, many of our walks take place in well-populated areas but you should still carry a cell phone for emergencies)
  8. Hat, gloves, jacket (if you walk in the winter months be aware that while it may be sunny, it can also be downright cold or even freezing so dress accordingly)
  9. ID and cash (ID for obvious reasons and cash because we tend to walk through a number of casinos and interesting shopping areas)
  10. A purse/daypack/waistpack (to carry the above mentioned items in)

South Strip Walk

It was another beautiful day for a walk.  The sun was out and a cool breeze could be felt by the waterfalls.  It is great to live in Vegas.
